Safiannikoff speaks of a type of
similar figurine, kantungu, adorned with a cauri or round ornament set at the level of the
belly, and which "means the presence of a womb, a symbol of motherhood in the
women " ; this type of statuette would have been used during female initiations
(1972:171, Fig. 100).
