The name “agba” which characterizes this type of mask means the “old man” or “the ancient”. Agba masks were performed at festivals, particularly during the Aku, an annual ceremony which commemorated men who died during the previous year if they had received the title of Amanwulu or Ibena during their lifetime. But, according to SL Kasfir, this type of mask also appeared outside funeral festivals to commemorate the founders of local lineage groups.
